Changing your display refresh rate when the battery is low (without VRR)
Aug 14th, 2025
Today I was messing around with my laptop display, when I noticed that it had a 48Hz mode; I immediately thought it was going to be great to save power (spoiler: it probably doesn't save all that much).

Ryujinx can't (couldn't?) be compiled
Jul 29th, 2025
After Nintendo successfully managed to close down the Ryujinx project, out of curiosity I tried to compile its source code, as the repo had been backed up and reuploaded both on GitHub and the Internet Archive.
There still were (and are) builds for Windows and Linux, and my notes from back then say the Flatpak version was still available on Flathub.
Also, back then I was experimenting with C#/.NET and Ryujinx is written in C#, so I figured I could give it a try.
What I found is that the project did not build, and for quite complicated reasons.

The problem with unbuildable open source software
Jul 5th, 2025
In the last couple of years, I've had a problem: some software is not available in binary form, or the binaries are too old to run on my system (this of course happens only on Linux, as Windows has amazing backwards compatibility most of the time); so I am forced to build it myself. Or I just want to do it anyway, just as a challenge. -
Booting 101E on Dolphin
Jul 2nd, 2025
101E is the title ID of a disc Nintendo used to test GameCube consoles in the factory, also known as "Uji Diag Station" or "Main Unit Inspection Disc".
I decided to obtain a dump of the disk1 out of curiosity; I first tried to run it on my Wii, where nothing interesting happened.
I then tried to run in Dolphin, where I ended up having to patch out some infinite loops. Here are all the things I had to fix to have the software run. -
The death of the content creator (hopefully)
Jun 11th, 2025
For the past 20 years or so, any digital media, be it games, video or music, has been called "content", and its creator called a "content creator".
I find that this term - "content creator" - deeply belittling for the person (or people) that create what would be normally called art.

The NetBSD OpenSSL PowerPC oopsie
Jun 7th, 2025
Last year, the NetBSD team has started to maintain an official port of the operating system to the Nintendo Wii, powered by a custom PowerPC processor by IBM.
Out of curiosity, I tried to run it on my console.

The impossible Wii
May 31st, 2025
As you can see from here, I own a first motherboard revision Wii console.
I have had this console since 2009 - and I almost bricked it several times. Originally it had an Argon II modchip, which is an absolute trainwreck on its own, but I have since removed it and gave it to a friend of mine.
